'White Ribbon Day' - 25th Nov 2009
Domestic violence contributes to more ill health and premature death for women aged 15 to 44 than any other single factor. In Australia, one in three women in a relationship have experienced violence by their partner. The belief that women are more often assaulted by working- class men or men of particular ethnicities is a sterotype rooted in racism and prejudice. Abusers come from all walks of life, all backgrounds and amyone can be abused. Wives of judges, teachers, doctors and politicians suffer from domestic violence. Violence happens in all types of families, in urban and rural communities, in all ethnic groups, rich, poor and middle-class families to people of any age. Violence crosses all boundaries.
We would like to warmly thank the enthusiastic crowd of women and men who gathered for a morning tea at the Sanctuary Cafe at the Ken Duncan Gallery, Erina. They joined us in support of White Ribbon Day, the United Nations day for the elimination of violence against women.
Guests enjoyed beautiful morning tea as Gunilla Miranda read extracts from her latest book "From Nobel Prize to Ride on Mower".
Several guests had questioned Gunilla to why she didn't leave the situation, her answer was that it was difficult to leave when you are in a foreign country and have no passports and no family and friends to help you. Several suggestions were bought forth to as how we can all be more aware when someone is abused. The audience agreed that the main thing for all of us is to speak up, ask questions and report abuse to the police and stop being silent!
Guest speaker Jan Stark entertained guest by reading her poetry which told the stories behind the original award winning artworks she had kindly exhibited on the day. Jan also shared her moving life story with all the attentive guests.
Lachlan Walker entertained the guests with his violin and also played a few melodies on his keyboard that was kindly lent to us by the Central Coast Grammar School (Lachlan is currrently studying business as Uni in Sydney.)

Gleebooks - Book Launch
Gleebooks was as usually very busy and this Saturday was no exception.
The guests arrived close to 3.30 pm and immediately a cozy atmosphere filled the room.
The youngest guest being only 5 weeks and the oldest 82 years so you can certainly say that it was a good spread.
The Swedish Ambassador who was going to launch the book, however; he was called away in the last minute and was therefore replaced for the day by Katja Lin, priest from The Swedish Lutheran church in Sydney.
She did a great job giving a personal touch in her speech by telling the audience about her own arrival to Sydney about the same time as Gunilla Miranda and how hard it can be to be new in a country.
The author then took over and read from her book, 5 different events. She has chosen to call it events in stead of chapters.
Many people were very moved by her story that went from trauma to triumph.
Thereafter it was time for book signing. A lot of people stood in the queue to have their book signed.
It was certainly a day full of excitement, joy and tears. We now wish Gunilla Miranda
well on her next book launch event that will take place in Frankfurt, Germany.
